750 people are losing their jobs at a Kansas City steel plant, the city’s biggest job loss since the economy started slowing. GST Steel is closing its plant after filing for bankruptcy. GST says record amounts of imported steel, which sells for lower prices, and high labor costs have led to the bankruptcy and the layoffs. The plant, which used to be the ARMCO steel plant, has roots in Kansas City going back to the founding of the Kansas City Bolt and Nut Company in 1888.
