Republicans have claimed a seat in the state senate that has been Democratic for years. And the win by John Cauthorn in a northeast Missouri state senate district means Republicans control the state senate for the first time since 1948. Republicans held onto the senate seat from northwest Missouri. Representative David Klindt of Bethany won that one, the seat Sam Graves gave up to become a Congressman. Democrat Patrick Dougherty won the state senate seat from St. Louis abandoned by Lacy Clay, who won a Congressional race in November. Republicans now control the state senate 1816.
