Senator Marvin Singleton of Joplin wants the state senate to reject recommendations from a citizens salary commission that would increase the pay of legislators, elected officials, and sitting and retired judges by 11% over the next two years. He says the state’s budget shortfalls make it a bad idea. Plus, he says legislators should not get greater increases than regular state workers. Senator John Scott of St. Louis, a senior member of the senate, favors accepting the pay raises because he says better pay is needed to attract the best people to the legislature.
