A 12-inch gas line ruptured last night and exploded under the Holmes Street Bridge in mid-town Kansas City. Because the line carries gas to the nearby Truman Medical Center and Children’s Mercy Hospital, gas was allowed to flow and feed the fire. When the hospitals were switched to reserve systems, the flow of gas was finally shut off. A section of the bridge was destroyed. It is closed indefinitely.
