Missouri Supreme Court Judge Ronnie White has had his chance to speak to members of the Senate Judiciary Committee considering the John Ashcroft’s nomination as Attorney General. Judge White, whose nomination to a federal judgeship was derailed by then-Senator Ashcroft, was asked whether he thought Ashcroft was qualified to serve as U.S. Attorney General. “I believe Senator John Ashcroft seriously distorted my record,” he responded. White said, though, it would be up to the committee to decide if that kind of distortion would disqualify the candidate. Ashcroft blocked White’s nomination because of his dissent in a death penalty case stemming from a multiple killing in California, Missouri, in the early 1990’s.
