Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on John Ashcroft’s nomination to be Attorney General included testimony today from Missouri Congressman Kenny Hulshof. Earlier today, the panel heard from Missouri Supreme Court Judge Ronnie White, whose nomination to a federal judgeship was derailed by then-Senator Ashcroft. At issue was White’s dissent in a case involving the 1991 killings of four people by James Johnson in California, Missouri. Hulshof prosecuted that murder case, and says Ashcroft’s opposition to White stemmed from his belief that White’s record on crime was not what it should have been. Hulshof says he is troubled by suggestions that Ashcroft’s opposition was racially motivated.
