The head of American Airlines says TWA would have shut down this week or next week if American had not offered to buy it. American Airlines says it is buying almost all of TWA’s assets, and will pump money into TWA to keep it going until a bankruptcy judge okays the purchase. American’s CEO, Donald Carty, says his company also will try to push some business toward TWA, merging the companies frequent flyer plans. Carty does not think anti-trust problems will come up with the TWA purchase. He says it’s better to keep that service going than to let it die.
