Representative Dennis Bonner of Independence expects his bill, called Jake’s Law, to breeze through the General Assembly this year. He says the bill wasn’t introduced until February during last year’s session, and lawmakers just didn’t have enough time to work with. Jake’s Law would require corrections officers to make sure an inmate they plan to release has no outstanding warrants against him. Bonner says the bill has more than 40 co-sponsors this year and should “pass easily.”
