The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee things John Ashcroft will get the votes he needs for his new job. Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah says Ashcroft will make a “wonderful attorney general.” Hatch’s committee will take testimony from supporters and detractors. It’s reported state supreme court judge Ronnie White wants to testify. Ashcroft blocked White’s appointment to a federal judgeship. Hatch isn’t so sure that will happen, though the top democrat on the committee, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, has reportedly invited him.
