Governor Wilson has acted to confirm his promise to the public and appoint Jean Carnahan to the US Senate seat won by her late husband. Wilson made the promise to appoint Jean shortly after Mel Carnahan died in a plane crash south of St. Louis October 16th. Wilson held a special ceremony as he signed the documents declaring Jean Carnahan would served as Missouri’s junior senator when the vacancy became official January 3rd. Wilson says he made the appointment early so Jean Carnahan could participate in freshman orientation that is taking place this week in Washington. The governor’s legal counsel says the vacancy existed as soon as the vote was certified. That took place Monday afternoon.
