A leading democratic party campaign official says the media “almost sainted” Mel Carnahan after last month’s airplane crash. Deputy executive director Andrew Grossman of the democratic senatorial campaign committee says people learned things the week after the crash either they did not know or had forgotten about Carnahan. At the same time, Senator Ashcroft had stopped campaigning for the week. Polls showed Ashcroft dropped behind Carnahan during that week. He was able to close the gap in the closing days of the campaign after that, but still lost. Ashcroft says stopping his campaign during that funeral week was still the right thing to do.
