Missouri democrats have targeted John Ashcroft for years and finally knocked off the veteran republican in the U.S. senate seat. Still, Missouri democratic party executive director Roy Temple finds it difficult to celebrate too much. Temple worked with Governor Carnahan for 10 years and managed his successful re-election campaign in 1996. Carnahan died in a plane crash October 16th. His name remained on the ballot and his wife, Jean, has agreed to take his place in the US Senate. Temple calls it “overwhelming” for Governor Carnahan, his son, Roger, and aide Chris Sifford not to be around to enjoy the victory.
