It could take awhile for a woman who’s never held elective office to get up-to-speed in the U.S. Senate. That’s one of several challenges facing Jean Carnahan, who is also grieving over the loss of her husband. Mrs. Carnahan’s personal political views and qualifications also remain largely unknown. But campaign spokesman Tony Wyche says the campaign may not make her available for public appearances or reporter questions. He reassures voters that her views are exactly the same as Governor Carnahan’s were. And he says she is the “single most qualified” person available to serve. The Kansas City Star yesterday endorsed John Ashcroft, in part because of questions over electing a relatively unknown candidate.
