Gov hopefuls debate school funding

November 1, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

A dispute on the role of gambling revenue in public education intensifies in the gubernatorial race. Democrat Bob Holden has been unrelenting in his criticism of Republican Jim Talent’s $35 million classroom trust fund. Holden claims the fund would rob the regular school funding formula, a claim Talent strongly denies. Talent claims the state has been funneling gambling money to education as required, then reducing the amount of general revenue dedicated to education. He says his trust fund would correct that.
