A new statewide survey done for the Kansas City Star shows the leading candidates in the U.S. Senate race are tied. The poll done for the Kansas City Star gives Ashcroft and Carnahan each 46%. Undecided votes number 7%. The Star says it also tried to gauge the impact of the sympathy vote in the race, with a follow-up question that explained the death of Mel Carnahan in a plane crash and the intention of the governor to appoint his widow to take his place if he would win. The Star says that after that question, Carnahan moved to a 47-45% lead.
