“Don’t let the fire burn out” is the apparent theme for Democrats running for statewide offices in wake of the death of Governor Carnahan. At a joint rally held at the State Capitol, several democrats running for statewide office appeared. They included candidate for governor Bob Holden, lieutenant governor hopeful Joe Maxwell, secretary of state candidate Steve Gaw, candidate for treasurer Nancy Farmer, plus incumbent attorney general Jay Nixon, who is fending off a challenge for his position. State auditor Claire McCaskill and sitting secretary of state Bekki Cook also joined the event, as did state democratic party executive director Roy Temple. The new mantra, “Don’t let the fire burn out,” refers to a speech made by Carnahan’s daughter at his memorial service.
