John Ashcroft is trying to get his face back on the campaign trail, without having to discuss issues. He met with reporters yesterday at a series of staged photo opportunity around the state. In Jefferson City, Ashcroft bagged groceries for five or ten minutes, but passed on several chances to comment on the announcement that Jean Carnahan might fill her husband’s role in the Senate if the late governor beats Ashcroft on election day. He made similar appearances in Springfield, Joplin, Cape Girardeau, and Kirksville.
