Debate shadowed by death

October 18, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

St. Louis hosted the third and final Presidential debate, a contest cloaked in mourning for Governor Mel Carnahan. Debate number three began with host Jim Lehrer calling for a moment of silence following the tragic deaths of Governor Carnahan, his son, and the Governor’s friend. The candidates then offered condolences, with Bush extending his prayers to the families of those killed, and Gore saying he’d been Carnahan’s friend for a long time. Gore then went on to praise Carnahan for what he’d accomplished during two terms as Governor. Gore called the debate a living tribute to Mel Carnahan because, according to Gore, Carnahan loved the vigorous discussion of ideas. –Listen to audio from final debate at https://www.missourinet.com/CampaignWatch.htm
