Carnahan, Ashcroft mix it up

October 16, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

Governor Carnahan and Senator John Ashcroft have wrapped up their two debates in the race for the U.S. Senate seat. Governor Carnahan aggressively defended his record on education, crime, and taxes, and repeatedly attacked Senator Ashcroft on for his record in Washington. Ashcroft apologized for the partisan tone of the campaign and was more reserved in his criticisms of Carnahan. And he passed on chances to attack the governor’s record on minority protests in St. Louis and languishing transportation plans in the state. Ashcroft did scold Carnahan for granting a request by the Pope to commute the sentence of a Missouri death row sentence. The two men debated Friday on a St. Louis radio station and on public TV in Kansas City on Sunday.
