Campaigns point fingers in debate woes

October 16, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

The two campaigns for the U.S. Senate have some differences of opinion as to why there have been only two debates. There had been hopes for as many as five debates between incumbent Republican John Ashcroft and Democratic challenger Mel Carnahan in the race for Ashcroft’s Senate seat. But things didn’t work out. Carnahan blames the Ashcroft campaign for missed opportunities. David James of Ashcroft 2000 says it’s the Carnahan campaign’s fault. Carnahan and Ashcroft mixed it up on as St. Louis radio station on Friday. They debated again for public television in Kansas City on Sunday. Both sides are keeping the door open for a possible third debate.
