Cards’ Young Helps U.S. to Gold; Pyrah Reaches Finals

September 27, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

Cardinal farmhand Ernie Young has a gold medal after helping the U.S. beat Cuba 4-0 to capture the gold in baseball. Young’s bases-loaded single gave the Americans a 4-0 cushion, and Milwaukee Brewer prospect Ben Sheets did the rest. Sheets threw a complete game, three-hitter to shut out the Cubans, who came into the game hitting over .330 as a team. Willard native Jason Pyrah finished third in his semifinal heat of the 1500 meter run at the Olympics. Pyrah will run in the finals, seeking an Olympic medal, on Friday.
