Seaboard hogs land in Kansas

September 11, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

There won’t be a big pork processing plant in St. Joseph, but it will be the next thing to it. The plant will be in Kansas, just across the river. The Elwood, Kansas, city council has annexed 148 acres where Seaboard Farms plans to build a 16,000 hogs per day slaughterhouse. The mayor of St. Joseph figures its a done deal. And Larry Stobbs says if some or most of the 2,300 employees who work at the plant end up living in St. Joseph, the city will bear much of the burden for the plant, without receiving any benefit.
