Every doctor in Missouri is being asked to test every child at least twice in their first two years of life for lead poisoning. The state health department says only about 10% of the children were tested last year and more than 5,000 cases were found. The department estimates 83% of all housing in Missouri was built before 1978. That’s the year the federal government banned almost all lead from paint.
