Will Clark has rescued the Cardinals from the crisis of Mark McGwire’s knee injury. Clark lifted the Cards to victory again last night, when he belted an 8th-inning triple to tie the game, then scored the go-ahead run as the Cardinals beat the Marlins, 5-2. A.J. Burnett and Rick Ankiel hooked up for a pitcher’s duel that Burnett was winning 2-1 entering the 8th inning. But J.D. Drew doubled to start the eighth, and Clark tripled him home to tie the game. Craig Paquette singled Clark home to make it 3-2. The Cardinals added two more runs on Edgar Renteria’s double and Mike Matheny’s single. Mike James got the win in relief. Rick Ankiel received no decision, but pitched well, allowing three hits and one walk in six innings. The Reds are still 8 and 1/2 games back.More good news for the Cardinals… it appears catcher Carlos Hernandez won’t need to go on the disabled list with a back strain. The Cards expect him to be ready to play in 4 or 5 days. Originally they feared Hernandez would miss the rest of the season.
