Rams Cut Tuten, Turn to Rookie

August 23, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

Rams coach Mike Martz wasn’t kidding when he said Rick Tuten wasn’t guaranteed the punting job. Tuten has been released and the Rams have traded for a rookie John Baker from the Colts and handed him the job. Indianapolis will get a 7th round pick if Baker makes the roster. Baker was undrafted out of North Texas. He has averaged 43.6 yards per punt in the preseason. Tuten was averaging just 36 yards a punt. Also, Martz announced that quarterback Kurt Warner won’t play against the Cowboys in tomorrow’s exhibition. Martz says he wants to give backup Trent Green more work. The Rams cut linebacker Troy Pelshak to get to the 65-man limit. Pelshak is the first member of the team’s Super Bowl roster to be released. The release of Tuten means safety Keith Lyle will serve as holder for placekicker Jeff Wilkins.
