DEM 2000: Some short coattails

August 18, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

Though Missouri Democrats leave Los Angeles claiming success, it appears no statewide candidate is looking for help from the Gore/Lieberman ticket. Attorney General Jay Nixon, who is running for re-election, says Democrats haven’t received a lot of help from the top in the past. In 1996, President Clinton won Missouri by a plurality, receiving 48% of the vote. Republican Bob Dole got 41% and Reform Party candidate Ross Perot received 10%. Neither Mel Carnahan nor Bob Holden, in their respective races for U.S. Senate and Governor, have indicated they expect to benefit from Gore coattails.
