After missing a couple games with a bad hip, Jim Edmonds came back with a vengance. Edmonds launched a pair of home runs and drove in five runs as the Cardinals held off Montreal 10-7. New Cardinal Will Clark chipped in with three hits, including a home run, and two RBI. The Cardinals picked up a game on Cincinnati, and now lead the Central by five games. Clark started the scoring with a solo homer in the first, and Edmonds added a three run shot in the third and a two run blast in the fifth, as the Cardinals built a 10-2 lead. Pat Hentgen allowed two runs in seven innings for the win, but the Expos roughed up newly acquired reliever Jason Christiansen for three runs in just 2/3 of an inning. After playing 17 of their last 20 on the road, the Redbirds return home to host the Braves tomorrow.Cardinals catcher Mike Matheny has given a gift to the Cards’ new first baseman. Matheny offered his uniform number 22, which he has worn all 7 of his years in the big leagues, to Will Clark. Clark has worn 22 for 13 of his 15 major league seasons. Matheny will wear 44.
