The Governor’s Advisory Committee on Chip Mills has produced its final report for the governor and state lawmakers. The committee was organized to look into the environmental and economic impact of two high-capacity chip mills in southeast Missouri. The Director of the Department of Natural Resources, Stephen Mahfood, is pleased with several aspects of the report, which encourages “best management” practices for Missouri forests. Detractors–and there are many–blasted the report for failing to take any meaningful steps against what they see as a devastating environmental practice.
