Five former gold medalists are competing in the U.S. Gymnastics championships in St. Louis, but after day one of the women’s events only one of them is among the leaders. Amy Chow is in third place. Kristen Maloney is first, just ahead of Elise Ray. As for the other four members of the gold medal-winning 1996 Olympic team, Dominique Moceanu is tenth, Dominique Dawes is 13th, Kaycie Phelps is 17th, and Shannon Miller competed in only one event, finishing second in the uneven bars. Miller, Moceanu and Phelps are all battling injuries. The top 12 finishers qualify for the Olympic trials next month, but the former Olympians can petition for a berth.
