They were down to their final out, trailing the first-place White Sox 5-4 in the ninth. But the Royals weren’t done. Dave McCarty singled to drive in the tying run. Johnny Damon doubled to give the Royals the lead. Rey Sanchez singled in another run, and Kansas City held on to beat Chicago 7-6. It was the 18th time the Royals have won a game in their final at-bat. The White Sox scored a run against Jerry Spradlin in the bottom of the ninth, and had the winning runs on base, but Ricky Bottalico came in to get the final out for his 8th save. The comeback helped the Royals avert a loss after another blown lead. They had led 4-0 after homers by Jermaine Dye and Mark Quinn. Dye has 26 home runs. The Royals return home tonight to start a four-game series with Tampa Bay.
