The Cardinals finally wore down the best pitcher in the National League. Fernando Tatis hit a grand slam to cap a six-run sixth inning, as the Cardinals beat Randy Johnson and Arizona 7-3. The Diamondbacks led 3-1 when catcher Mike Matheny hit a two run homer to tie the game. Then with two outs, Placido Polanco singled and Edgar Renteria walked. Arizona removed Johnson from the game, and Jim Edmonds drew a walk from Dan Plesac. The D-Backs brought in Russ Springer, and Tatis drilled a grand slam into the left field seats, giving the Cardinals the lead for good. Garrett Stephenson was a workhorse, throwing 141 pitches in 8 innings for the win, to improve to 11-6. The Cardinals managed five runs off Johnson in 5 and 2/3 innings. Johnson hurt himself with seven walks, as he fell to 15-3. Cardinal ace Darryl Kile will pitch tonight against Armando Reynoso.
