Hundreds protest St. Joe plant

July 25, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

More than 200 opponents of a possible Seaboard Farms pork processing plant in St. Joseph fill the city council chambers. Mayor Larry Stobbs told the group St. Joseph will offer no economic incentives, but says if the plant follows local and federal laws when it locates on private land, there is nothing the city can do about it. Protesters believe the city could discourage Seaboard from locating if it told the company in no uncertain terms it was unwelcome. At least one supporter of Seaboard says local hog farmers could use the new market.
