Prisoner health costs unaccounted for

Missouri’s counties are not at all pleased with the recent decision by Governor Carnahan to veto legislation that would have seen the state paying for the health care costs of state prisoners in county facilities. Dick Burke of the Missouri Association of Counties says this leaves local taxpayers stuck with the tab. Counties get a flat $22 dollars per day for prisoners, which doesn’t even cover housing costs, much less emergency medical care.
