Cardinal starter Andy Benes tied a major league record by giving up four home runs in one inning, and Houston pounded the Cardinals 15-7. Benes gave up three runs in the first, and couldn’t get out of the second, as the Astros scored six times on four homers. Benes allowed nine runs in an inning and 2/3. Relievers Alan Benes and Heathcliff Slocumb had a tough time as well. They combined to allow six runs in three innings of work. The Cardinals have lost 7 of 9, and their lead over the Reds has shrunk to five games. The Cards are off today before a brief three-game homestand against Arizona.
