The law of the limits

July 20, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

There’s more than one way to skin a cat and more than one way to legally get money to your candidate. Joe Carroll with the Missouri Ethics Commission says when donors have given all they’re allowed to give, they still have options. Specifically, candidates can direct their maxed-out donors to political committees. Those committees–independent in the eyes of the law–can give money to whoever the want. State Representative Gracia Backer accuses her primary opponent for the Lieutenant Governor’s job, Senator Joe Maxwell, of using a less-than-independent committee to make sure he received money back from the donors he sent their way. She’s asking the Ethics Commission to investigate.
