Criminal accusations mar election

July 19, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

Representative Gracia Backer (D-New Bloomfield) accuses Joe Maxwell of breaking state campaign finance law. Specifically, she says Senator Maxwell and his associates have been re-directing donations from contributors who’ve reached their campaign limits. She claims second-hand knowledge that county democratic committees were promised 10% of the contribution if theyaccepted money from maxed-out contributors and turned it around to Maxwell. Maxwell admits he does direct donors who’re maxed-out in their donations to political committees. He also says he expects financial and organizational help from those committees if they’ve endorsed him. But he denies that he guarantees donors he’ll receive the money because it is independent.
