A bad throttle burned up a Vanguard jet engine. It sent Vanguard flight 584 on its way to Chicago back to Kansas City. Passengers say they knew something was wrong. Many reported hearing a muffled bang, followed by a bright orange flash. The pilot asked for permission to return to Kansas City International Airport where mechanics found one of the plane’s two engines destroyed. The plane’s 62 passengers had to find other flights to get to Chicago.
