The suspect in an elaborate kidnapping and rape scheme in Columbia may have fled the country. Columbia police believe University of Missouri Spanish teacher Ronald Karjala has flown to Venezuela where he once lived. He’s accused of raping his former girlfriend. Police detective Bryan Leibhart says Karhala rented an apartment to carry out the attack and padded it with thousands of dollars in sound insulation. He’s accused of strapping the girl in a specially-made chair complete with straps, bolts, and a dog collar. The victim escaped after nearly five hours of captivity by loosening one of her arms.
