Missouri native Gene Bartow has retired as athletic director at Alabama-Birmingham. Bartow built the basketball program from scratch, and served as basketball coach and A.D. from for 18 years, before turning the basketball team over to his son Murray in 1995. Gene Bartow was born in Browning, Missouri, and holds degrees from Northeast Missouri State and Washington University in St. Louis. He coached at high schools in Shelbina and St. Charles, and at Central Missouri State.
