Five St. Louisans Mark Upset Anniversary

Today marks the 50th anniversary of one of the biggest upsets in sports, an event that had a heavy St. Louis flavor. On June 29, 1950, a team of American amateur soccer players, including five from St. Louis, defeated England 1-0 in a World Cup game in Brazil. The American players themselves were stunned by the victory. Frank Borghi, a St. Louisan who was the goalkeeper on that team, says they had hoped to hold England to six or seven goals.
