Mizzou’s McBride Wins Amateur

June 26, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

University of Missouri golfer Mark McBride, of Lebanon, won the Missouri amateur title Sunday. McBride defeated former pro Bryan Norton 2 and 1 in the 36-hole final at Oakwood Country Club in Kansas City. McBride sank a three foot birdie putt on the 35th hole to win the tournament. The last two years McBride has lost to the eventual champion in the Missouri Amateur. McBride was 3-up early on the final day, before Norton took the lead on the 25th hole. McBride responded with four straight birdies, winning three of those holes to regain the lead for good. McBride is 20, and will be a junior on the Mizzou golf team this fall. The youngest age for a winner of the Missouri Amateur was 17, by Jay Ward in 1918, and Tom Watson in 1967.
