Rueter Shuts Down Cards

June 22, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

Giants’ pitcher Kirk Rueter outdueled Cardinal starter Garrett Stephenson, and the Giants won at Busch Stadium, 4-1. Rueter is 5-0 in his career at Busch, after limiting the Cards to four hits and one run in seven innings. Stephenson battled him to a 1-1 tie through seven innings, but Doug Mirabelli took him deep leading off the eighth, snapping the tie. Stephenson finished with three runs in 7 and 1/3, dropping his record to 9-3. He drove in the Cardinals’ only run with a bloop single in the 2nd. Cards’ reliever Jesse Orosco struck out Barry Bonds in the 8th before hitting J.T. Snow to force in a run, but then Orosco left with pain in his elbow, and he may be back on the D.L. after missing most of the season already.
