AG defends death penalty

June 13, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

Attorney General Jay Nixon rejects conclusions by a Columbia University study on the death sentence. It found 2/3 of the country’s death penalty cases have been overturned; 1/3 in Missouri have been reversed. Nixon says the strength of the appeals process, not the weakness of the system. And he says Missouri’s cases have been very carefully examined. Only prison inmate Eric Clemmons has won acquittal in Missouri after an appeals court ordered a new trial. He was found NOT guilty of a prison murder earlier this year in Springfield.
