The Cardinals-Royals matchup is supposed to feature two slugging lineups, but it was pitching the gave the Royals game one. Kansas City got solid efforts from starter Mac Suzuki, and the bullpen, and beat the Cardinals 7-4. Suzuki carried a 7-1 lead into the 6th inning, before tiring, and allowing three runs. Jason Rakers, Jeff D’Amico and Jerry Spradlin then blanked the Cardinals on one hit over the last 3 and 2/3 innings, and the Royals won 7-4. Kansas City’s Jermaine Dye homered for the fourth straight game. The Royals scored four runs in the sixth to blow open a 3-1 game. Mike Sweeney had a two run double, and Shawon Dunston made a two-run error at first base. The Cardinals lost both Mark McGwire and Fernando Vina to hamstring injuries during the game. Both are listed as day to day. Tonight, Chris Fussell starts against Andy Benes.
