Stephenson Hurls First Shutout at D-Backs

May 30, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

Garrett Stephenson has now done something no Cardinal pitcher has ever done before. Not Gibson, not Dean, not even Andujar. Stephenson is 8-0, the first Cardinal ever to start the season that way. He fired his first career shutout yesterday, beating Arizona, 3-0. Stephenson is the first Cardinal to throw back to back complete games since Todd Stottlemeyer did it in May of 1998, and he has now allowed one run in his last 18 innings. Stottlemeyer was the man Stephenson beat yesterday, though Stottlemeyer allowed only one run in 5 and 1/3 innings before leaving with an elbow problem. Edgar Renteria singled in a run in the third, and Vina drove in two more in the 7th to complete the scoring. The Cardinals and Diamondbacks meet again tonight. Rick Ankiel 4-2, pitches against Omar Daal, who has struggled to a 2-5 start.
