Purple Heart to World War I soldier at last

May 13, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

The family of World War One soldier Charlie Yagel has finally gotten the Purple Heart, more than 80 years after he was wounded, and then killed when he returned to service. Congresswoman Pat Danner presented the medal to Yagel’s nephew, Jacob Yagel of Purdin, a community in northwest Missouri. Private Charlie Yagel was wounded while attacking a machine gun nest. After his recovery in a hospital, he returned to service, and was killed in October, 19-18 during the campaign in the Argonne forest.
