The Cardinals lead the major leagues in home runs, but last night, they got a unique one from Fernando Vina. Vina laced a line drive over the head of diving right fielder Armando Rios, and circled the bases for a three run, inside-the-park home run. Vina’s round-tripper was part of an 8-run second inning as the Cardinals pounded the Giants 13-6. Garrett Stephenson was again the benificiary of the offensive outburst. He is 5-0, and the Cardinals are averaging over nine runs per game in his starts. Edgar Renteria and Ray Lankford also homered, J.D. Drew and Craig Paquette each drove in two runs, and Mark McGwire reached base five times and scored twice. The Cards and Giants meet in the rubber game of the series this afternoon. Andy Benes starts for the Cards against Kirk Rueter. The Cardinals are trying to avoid losing two out of three for the third straight series.
