Jack Sprague dominated the first major event of the season at Gateway International Raceway outside of St. Louis. Sprague won the NASCAR truck race by more than 7 seconds over Jimmy Hensley. The only suspense for Sprague was whether his left-side tires would hold out. He ran the entire 200 mile race without changing tires on the left side. Sprague is the defending truck series champion. St. Louisan Mike Wallace finished 7th, and leaves his hometown still leading the points race.
