Griffey Bomb Burns Cards

May 8, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

The Cardinals were tied at 7 with the Reds. Manager Tony LaRussa visited the mound and told reliever Darren Holmes, making his first appearance as a Cardinal, not to give Ken Griffey anything to hit. Holmes nibbled at the edges of the plate, running the count to 3-2, and made a mistake. Griffey sent a fastball into the right field seats for a two-run homer, lifting the Reds to a 9-7 win over the Cardinals. Eric Davis hit a grand slam for St. Louis, but misplayed a ball in right field that helped the Reds overcome a 6-3 deficit. Eli Marrero also homered for the Cards. Mark McGwire returned to the lineup after missing Saturday’s game. He had flown to Detroit to be with his brother, who was in a serious car accident on Friday. The Reds took two of three from the Cardinals in the weekend series. The Cards continue their road trip in San Francisco tonight. Pat Hentgen will take a 3-3 record to the mound against Livan Hernandez.
