Hentgen Fades, Cards Lose

May 4, 2000 By admin Leave a Comment

Cardinal pitcher Pat Hentgen ran out of gas in the 6th inning once again. Brian Giles and Kevin Young smacked back-to-back homers in the 6th, wiping out a 2-1 Cardinal lead, and sending the Pirates on their way to an 8-2 win. The Pirates put the game away with four runs in the 7th off Gene Stechschulte. Jim Edmonds was 3 for 3, pushing his average to .402. The Cardinals have signed 2nd baseman Fernando Vina to a three year, 15-million dollar contract, with a club option for a 4th year. They have also signed veteran reliever Darren Holmes who was recently released by Arizona. The Cards will try to avoid a sweep by the Pirates this afternoon. Garrett Stephenson, 3-0, will pitch against Francisco Cordova.
